I Don’t Want To Be The Huntsman!

Question

I am looking for a bit that will help to keep my hunter with the field rather than up hunting the hounds!  He is a big lad, 16.3hh, 6 years old and very keen with a tendency to be heavy on the forehand.  He has been well schooled so he understands the aids and is otherwise responsive but takes too long to come back to me when out hunting.  This is now getting very dangerous.  I am an experienced rider I compete in Open Hunter Trials with my older horse and so I don’t like to haul on his mouth.  I have tried various bits and the best one to date has been the Neue Schule Tranz Universal.

Suggestion

After reviewing your question and from the Bitting Questionnaire you have completed we would suggest that the logical choice would be the Waterford Universal, initially without the curb strap option.  The Waterford is designed for use under the circumstances you have described.  It is usually beneficial for horses that lean and pull and should allow you to use a lot less pressure through the rein in order to achieve the control, thereby saving the horse’s mouth.
