Question
I have a 5 year old who is doing basics at the minute, he is in the Tranz Angled Baucher but for jumping he pulls his head up and rushes into a fence, occasionally I will lose him between hand and leg when he rushes. He throws his head up which pulls my hands up and will get away from me and can sometimes nip out to the side past a fence. I need a bit of help as I’m struggling to keep him together and I’m not sure if this is to do with him being green or if he needs another bit. I’ve had him since a yearling and have found that as we are doing more jumping, both showjumping and cross country he is rushing more, even though on the flat he is well schooled and polite.
Suggestion
If you are happy on the flat and need to be Dressage legal you could remain in the Baucher, however for jumping we would suggest that you try the Tranz Angled Lozenge Universal first, possibly with the addition of the curb to help maintain a better outline – although it would be best to try without the curb initially and then introduce the curb gradually in a safe schooling environment.
It is often a good idea to use two bits anyway from a mouth management point of view as you will be utilising different pressure points and so help to keep the mouth fresh. We would also suggest that with any bit which applies poll pressure that you use a padded headpiece or a gel poll guard.
